A History....and A Future
First United Methodist Church, Wellsville
The Library was first instituted on January 13, 1960. Over the years it has been moved three times from different places within the church. Peg Ball was Librarian for over 50 years and now, Sue Browning serves as Librarian. There have been many assistants and helpers over this time span. Among them has been Maryann McCarn, Kay Ball, Jessie Stark, Sheila Smith, Judy Servey and others.
When it was first established, it was located between the Pastor's office and the Office. It was a closet which contained 25 to 50 books. Next the Library moved on to the Children's Church Room at the back of the Sanctuary, as it out grew the small closet. The last move was to the present Library Room. It has grown to include a diversity of books, DVD's, VHS tapes and audio's. It is hard to know at present how many books are on the shelves.
All books have been donated either by, given in memory, or in honor of, and/or by individuals within the church. We are able to purchase some books, videos and children books with donations and a small budget. The Children's book area contains something for every child. The videos are popular as well.
Retired books are recycled through the Annual Rummage sale each year to make a space for new books. We now have a “Wish List” for Christian books and video's to help grow the library. This has proved to be adding great books. Recommendation for books and videos has also helped us update new authors, titles and series. Recommendations are always welcome.
You are always welcome to come and browse the shelves or sit for a spell and read a page or two.
